It's not easy to do this technology. Gartner predicted video technology for sales tools was 10 years off. Not because people don't want it, but it's very hard to do across all platforms, devices and browsers as you pointed out.
And that just getting it to work on clean devices before people gunk it up with a bunch of other crap. As an example, video calling apps like skype has been around for years but how many times have people been on a call where something doesn't work for someone.
If you are going to have cutting edge technology you have to put what the minimum standards and supported platforms are just so people don't whine "It doesn't work on my Commodore 64 from 1982."
