That's very good advice but I would add - get a job during high school. Many of my generation held after school and summer jobs.
It was an excellent learning experience in handling money and responsibility.
What I found really cool is one of our high schools has a four year construction course. In their senior year they build a House for Humanity.
These kids learn how to read blueprints and enough of every construction trade to get a construction job when they graduate.
Home Depot has donated a lot of the materials and they get a lot from the Habitat for Humanity ReStores. The stores also help fund the construction of new Habitat homes.
