To make the transition to renewable energy, we’re going to need more than just solar panels and wind turbines. It’s also going to take a revolution in energy storage technology to keep the lights on when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
A big chunk of that storage so far comes from Tesla, which you might think of as a car company but is maybe really a battery company hiding behind an electric car.
Today, the company has said it’s reached a milestone: It has installed one gigawatt-hour of storage since 2015 (the entire world installed the same amount in all of last year). In developments from Australia to Puerto Rico, these batteries are helping stabilize grids that are powered by renewables.
Tesla may be in the midst of some very public financial issues (and Elon Musk should probably get off Twitter), but its batteries are helping make clean power a reality.
