GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) _ Novavax Inc. (NVAX) on Wednesday reported a loss of $46.4 million in its first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Gaithersburg, Maryland-based company said it had a loss of 14 cents.

The results met Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for a loss of 14 cents per share.

The vaccine maker posted revenue of $9.7 million in the period, which beat Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $9.3 million.

In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, the company's shares hit $1.71. A year ago, they were trading at 85 cents.
