Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee reacted to the Boy Scouts of America renaming their marquee organization "Scouts BSA" in a nod to the newly co-ed nature of the group.
Boy Scouts of America chief executive Michael Surbaugh announced the change Wednesday, months after the organization began accepting girls into Cub Scouts.
Surbaugh said the BSA is "trying to find the right way to say we're here for both young men and young women."
"I think the Boy Scouts are effectively dead," Huckabee said, adding that in the 108 years prior to Surbaugh's decision, the Boy Scouts gave young men "an identity" as well as "camaraderie and fellowship" that a co-ed organization cannot.
"There really is a difference between boys and girls and the way they think and the way they grow up," he said.
