Your point about the 'flip' is well taken. It's ONLY possible if you have something damaging to tell.
And of course 'making things up' in the 'flip' will destroy the plea deal and result in more 'time' tacked on to the charges. It's really all about corroboration of what the prosecution already has in hand, to create a provable case.
