Longs shouldn’t care about a few pennies if they think the stock will be triple digits one day. If everyone put a buy order limit at 45 cents (hypothetical) instead of hitting the ask, how can the stock ever go up? That’s invitation for the MMs to take the price down knowing they can fill many orders at 45 cents.
