Civil cases are easier to win than criminal cases. You don't have as large a burden of proof. Remember than the Simpson/Goldman families had to sue OJ in civil court to get a very small measure of justice for the crimes he's now confessed to in that interview ("IF" he did it, sure). People think they can get away with their sociopathic behavior but when a jury of normal people in a civil suit sees what the crooks have done, they are much more likely to try to punish the crooks by awarding damages to the aggrieved parties.
