I had to pay my way through college which taught me several clever ways to make it on the cheap. The rent on a 4 bedroom single story farmhouse was $225.00 per month + keeping the yard mowed and cleaned up. Rent was good with having 3 other roommates. The house was located on a 20 acre pond filled with catfish, turtles and frogs so we never went too long without being able to eat. We had deer, squirrels, rabbits, dove and a few covey of quail to feast on during the weekends. We even learned that 'trading' our food for beans, potatoes and greens with neighboring farmers worked out well.
I actually worked for the college to pay for my tuition and books. Each paycheck, the college's finance department would just deduct those expenses from my paycheck. When I graduated, I had no school loans to worry about.
My car, insurance, tires and maintenance was paid by the bank as I would repossess vehicles for them in the evenings and weekends.
I was lucky to learn about life and business while obtaining my degree.
