A company can not protect themselves from shorts. It is so important to keep the shareholders and the general public informed on the progress of the company in general terms. The stock of a company goes up and down by trading it. By informing the stock holders of current activities they will in turn discuss the results with others thus promoting the company bringing in new investors causing more buying and the stock to rise.
