Correct, Fitbit doesn't tie in directly with how the Russians are hacking our troops smartphones.However, it does geolocate them. I became aware of this new PERSEC threat a couple days ago like you. It has helped empasize just how vulnerable their unprotected smartphones are. This will help keep the spotlight on the need for defensive software to be put on them to prevent geolocating and intelligence gathering.
