That's exactly wrong. The FINRA number means exactly that -- that the sales marked as short sales are indeed sales marked as short sales.
Why do you think words don't mean what they mean?
Not trying to put words in sox's mouth, but what seems to be his objection is that Alan is not spelling out what every trader ought to know -- that people daytrade, and not every long position is held beyond the close, nor is every short position held beyond the close.
