What would you think if instead of these results:
Quote:
Incidence of severe OM in Per Protocol (PP) Population: Brilacidin 36.8%, Placebo 60.0%.

the difference were Brilacidin, 36.8% incidence, placebo group 75% incidence?

Because that is MUCH more likely to be the result in a large population.

The incidence of severe OM in other studies is about 75% (see link below). Cutting that down to about half as much incidence sounds lots more impressive. And, that is likely the reality.

There's something wrong with the 60% number in this study -- whether it is from random chance, or perhaps the placebo rinse actually had some beneficial result, or perhaps there was some error in record-keeping that mixed up some Bril-OM group patients with placebo-group patients. But, 60% is a very low incidence of OM for that placebo group.

Quote:
Severe OM (SOM) occurs in almost 75% of these patients and is among the most debilitating and painful side effects related to treatment (Elting et al., 2009).
