County’s three mayors discuss plans, goals for the new year

Lancaster County’s most southern municipality, Kershaw, is set to experience an economic boom of sorts from the activity at nearby Haile Gold Mine.

Canadian company Romarco Minerals has been at the site (just east of the Kershaw town limits) for a few years now.

This year, the company expects to receive its permit to construct a gold mine, which is projected to be in operation at least 10 years.

During mine construction, as many as 500 people are expected to work at the site. After construction, between 250 and 270 full-time workers and 80 contractors will remain on site during normal operations.

“This is very big for us,” said Kershaw Mayor Wayne Rhodes. “We’ve been waiting and getting ready for this.”
