Remember that once a drug is approved, doctors can prescribe it off-label for other uses. But, getting approval is way better because then the doctor doesn't have to worry about liability issues, and also the drug company can advertise it for the other indications. If it's being used off-label, they can't advertise it or have the salespeople talk about it to doctors.
