1. I use Etrade real-time scanners, search criteria below (must have ET Pro to use it). Finviz.com is also helpful and free

2. High volume is relative to avg volume, therefore detection can start early
3. Find alerts by being on this board, networking, also using social media such as Twitter (can not stress enough what a powerful tool networking is)
4. MM=market maker; you learn them with experience over time and watching plenty of Level II screens. Also remember though MMs playing particular roles often it is not locked in stone and their behavior can change.
