The float is the amount of free trading shares out in the open market, meaning shares that have already been bought by someone at some time. Then you have what is called the outstanding shares, that is shares which include the float that can come into the market if sold by someone, then you have the authorized which is the amount of shares the company can put into the market arena at some point.
