From my television background:
SONY made a HUGE major marketing mistake.
Betamax was a far superior product. SONY bet on the the public going for quality over recording/playback time.
Betamax was an hour.
VHS offered options on recording time longer than an hour, but with lesser quality.
In a strange way, it's similar to the way people now view video on their phones. Not so much the 4k getting the most eyes.... it's just getting it viewed on the web in any resolution. Just look at YouTube for instance. It runs the gambit of quality, but it's out there and gets viewed (sometimes gillons of hits on crap quality video).
My 2 cents....for whatever that's worth.
