I know you're right about the Govt. tapping into the Social Security fund when it was bloated, and never replacing what was borrowed with interest, but even if they had, I think everyone need to contribute to sustain it.
I believe that what's needed in Govt. is the same thing that's needed elsewhere in our world, that's ethics.
We have executives in govt. and industry who'll opt for the corporate or chartered jet when a commercial flight would cost a tiny fraction even if they go first class. Likewise we have all sorts of people who'll take enormous bonuses for themselves, while holding employees down to wages that often require them to hold multiple jobs to survive. All of this may be legal, but ethics are a different matter, and it's a lack of ethics that has permitted those in the very top of our wealth to be worth more than all who are under them.
I would love to see what would get built if only those who earned in the top 50% were permitted to work. I suspect that in some cases their would be zero product produced. I would also suspect that if the CEO and all management in a company could receive raises and bonuses that were no greater percentage wise than those of the employees, employees would be getting substantially greater wage increases. Of course this won't happen, but I know some pretty wealthy people who probably would be considered pauper's by those at the top of the money chain.
