I think it's kind of like this: It's like having little brother spill the beans on a secret kept with his big brother, and then the parents say, "What did you do Johnny? (While trying not to laugh!). Little brother then says, "It's not true, honestly, I swear!!!" After giving away too much information! Big brother meanwhile is thinking this isn't how it was supposed to be, and tells the little brother to categorically deny it.
