I never have either til I moved here. I read they are native to Europe. The variety I have looks like the ones in the video below, but the corn part, flower is usually not near as long as in the video.
I read the birds catch some of the flower(seed) on their feet and they fall off usually on the edges of forested areas or open , where birds fly. And that is where they grow in future years.
