bids are buyers. Asks are sellers. If buyers aren't willing to pay the sellers price, (the ask)the price holds still. As buyers begin buying up the shares at the ask, the ask moves up and price soon after. On the other hand, When a seller wants to sell at the bid, a buyer buys it and provides support. If more sellers sell at the bid then there are buyers, price drops. Hope that helps.
