I want to point out a significant detail. CD4 levels dropping below 250 do not immediately cause problems.
What it does is create more of an opportunity for the JV virus (which is present in 70 to 90% of people worldwide) to get out of control of the immune system which can result in PML.
If CD 4 levels drop below 250 then the answer is just to stop taking the drug and let CD 4 levels recover.
One other interesting caveat is that there are very few treatments for PML but, one recommended treatment is prescribing Ziagen.
A close examination of the Xenoport deal with $50 million in upfront payments and a quarter billion in backends will show you that that particular drug is a member of the Fumaric Acid Esters which also must be monitored for PML risk.
That's why I frequently set that as a relevant price comparison rather than "Prurisol is currently worth 10 billion."
(This is one of those "unanswered questions" I have eluded to that is probably impacting share price. )
The Prurisol results are do very soon and we will all get our answers.
That's why I'm adamant t's not "naked shorts" , it's trial funding and unanswered questions.
Good Prurisol results will solve both at once if they are good and show a dose response curve that's effective while keeping CD 4 above 250.
