The 'old free market system' gave us no coverage/astronomical premiums for pre-existing conditions, lifetime limits on coverage and people thrown off coverage for clerical errors.
The ACA IS a free market solution proposed by the Heritage Foundation. It described the mandate as a 'personal responsibility' provision. Place a public option alongside the private insurance system and best man wins....call it Medicare for All.
Supplemental plans available just as now, so Cigna and BCBS don't have to go and compete with GEICO for home and auto. LOL!
Your ascribing the fall of the Roman Empire to 'some science or psychology or such' is, amazingly, nowhere backed up by any work of history on the subject.
But yeah, maybe there was something behind the science of aqueducts and good roads, and something in Marcus Aurelius' and Cicero's writings, that has been overlooked in the treatments of the subject.

Hawks, I kind of don't fault the Dems for staying out of it. Nothing will work better than it was 20 years ago and why be blamed again. We now got major greedy oligopolies in most of the health care system and health insurance business, and it won't work better than the old free market system and won't be able to go back. I'm glad I'm 70., the US is going downhill and no stopping it, IMO. And not just with healthcare. There is some science or psychology or such behind the fall of the Roman Empire, me thinks.
