I am not a Reagan fan. He really started the debt explosion with his "Reaganomics. Carter has not been treated well by history, but he was the last President trying to reighn in debt. And it sounds like Trump/Pense will be even worse than Obama, debt wise.
Progress was made under Clinton, but he benefitted hugely from the internet boom and housing boom that was created by the "Fair Housing Act" that forced banks to giver loans to unqualified people and then the Repeal of Glass Steagall. So, Clintons economy was not sustainable either, due to the listed circumstances. By the way, Bill Clinton was never really President. Hillary ran the country through him while he was chasing women.
The last two responsible Presidents debt wise were, IMO, Ford and Carter.
