I agree Chan is shady. Here is an article about how he screwed shareholders in XPress and took all of the income. Although this was on the Singapore Exchange, so maybe different than here in the US?:

The family took out $493 million in income. At least we know Chan does have a lot of money- not a billionaire, but I'm guessing a few hundred million.
I bought my shares of AMBS before Chan entered the picture, again purely based on the value of the assets. My concern has always been not whether there will be a funding, but what the dilution will be when the dust settles. Chan could end up owning most of the company. If he owns say 50% for a small investment or a $3 to 4 million dollar loan, we can still do very well., but if he owns 90% or more, than we can be screwed. However, if their ultimate intention is to actually uplist to the Nasdaq, I don't think Chan can get too dirty- it has to be a pretty legitimate share structure.
As far big pharma buying AMBS at a discounted price- this never happens. Any informed investor knows big pharma does not buy unproven drugs- too risky. They want to see positive phase 2 results at least, sometimes phase 3. AMBS has neither. They usually won't even partner until the drug is proven in trials. That is why you can make 10 times your money in a pink sheet stock and not in Pfizer- risk/reward. If ESS had some early positive results from a phase 2, then the AMBS stock would skyrocket.
