I'm a nuclear engineer. I've also operated both naval and commercial nuclear reactors. I can say that the latest reactors being built in the US and the rest of the world have some of the best safety margins. The newest designs incorporate many passive safety systems that aren't in our current operating plants (currently active safety systems, aka, they need electric power to function). It's the cost of construction that makes the new plants not very competitive with other fuels. Westinghouse just filed for bankruptcy due to their budget overruns on the new plants they are building in the southeast.
