LT - can you elaborate what you mean by they still have exclusive JFK-LED? Aside from departure/landing slots at JFK, I didn't think there were restrictions on this route (as opposed to something like LHR). If another airline (e..g Aeroflot) wanted to fly the route, is anything stopping them?

That aside, it seems that SWF is a solid choice to start with if that' the direction they're headed. Running an errant flight or two out of JFK might be biting a lot off in the early stages due to the significantly higher fees and slots to pay for.
