My thoughts are this was developed to check medical endoscopes. If you look up the Deinococcus Bacteria is resistant to the following from Wikipedia:
Deinococcus radiodurans is an extremophilic bacterium, one of the most radiation-resistant organisms known. It can survive cold, dehydration, vacuum, and acid, and is therefore known as a polyextremophile and has been listed as the world's toughest bacterium
Heat is missing from the list, but you can not autoclave an endoscope, and they had a problem with that a few years ago.
