For this lower G.I. condition I don't think a pill would be appropriate -- presumably there would be MUCH more systemic absorption. The idea is to treat this locally via enema or foam, rather than bombing the patient's whole system with a powerful antibiotic.

As far as the severity of the illness in the study patients -- I don't think anyone would submit to this kind of unpleasant trial if the condition weren't pretty bad, do you?
