The real issue in the 1860's was which way the new land would be governed. Would we extend slavery west of the Mississippi?
That was the real subject. Lincoln played a huge role in getting the continental railroad pushed through and could see both sides of the issue. He felt his job was not to choose a side but UNIFY the country.

A position our current president needs to take a look at!
