PhotonDelta has asked Michael Lebby to head a team to investigate the opportunities ahead for the different types of PIC's technologies including InP, SiN, SiP and Polymer Photonics.
From the integrated photonics industry perspective, it has become clear that customers are demanding cost/speed ratios of $1/Gbps at 400Gbps within the datacentre environment.
The incumbent technology is InP and this continues to be utilized into optical networks, We're aware of developments in hybrid chip development.
In addition, Silicon photonics and Polymer photonics are both offering alternative economic and scalable pathways.
What has been tried and tested in fibre telecom is now being adapted for newly emerging non-communications opportunities.
Photonics technology is already enabling us build sensors to detect things that were previously impossible – e.g. cancers in the body, or metal fatigue in aircraft wings.
The team will review the current data, adding some projections based on previous experience in road mapping next-generation photonics technologies. This will be important fact-based input to the long-term road-mapping discussions in June 2017.
We’re part of a delegation in early January going to meet with Google, Microsoft and Facebook because it is important to have industry experts on board during the three-day summit, especially in the application roadmap development.
