SF 49ers Honor Colin Kaepernick with Team's Most Prestigious Award
Following a season marred in controversy surrounding him taking a knee during the national anthem, Colin Kaepernick has been honored by his teammates.
The San Francisco 49ers released the recipients of their team awards Friday, and Kaepernick won the Len Eshmont Award, the team's "most prestigious honor" given to the "49er who best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont, an original member of the 1946 49ers team."
The awards are voted upon by members of the 49ers team.
Kaepernick first made headlines this past preseason when he opted to sit during the singing of the national anthem.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he told NFL.com.
After much criticism, he began taking a knee during the anthem rather than sitting.
According to a September E-Marketing Research Poll, Kaepernick was voted the most disliked player in the NFL.
