6 million bucks is peanuts for a company like Pfizer. By NOT buying the company, they can let the company take all the risk. If the company gets heavily into debt and their drug fails, they go into bankruptcy and Pfizer is only out 6 million. If Pfizer bought it and had to develop the drug, it would cost them a LOT more than 6 million bucks. That's why so many big pharmas are reducing their own research and watching small companies.
