No, I don't agree. I think that his presidency brought out the latent bigotry and made it more overt. That's not his fault.
What was he to do, 'Uncle Tom' himself into some acceptably pliant 'good negro' to please the people who hated him?
He won twice because he had enough white votes, remember that.
And the ones he didn't win he was NEVER going to win.
