It was Canada.....
And of course they wanted to take advantage of Canada's wealth and prosperity, while also maintaining their Irish heritage. It took time, but people came around...now everyone is Irish on St Paddy's day but that wasn't always the case.
It always takes time....whenever a new wave comes in people say, "oh but these people are different from my parents/grandparents/greats" etc...
I can understand the fear of outsiders though...look how welcoming the natives were at Plymouth Rock and other places and look how they were treated.
