USS Arizona Survivor to Visit Pearl Harbor Memorial on 75th Anniversary of Attack
To mark the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, a survivor of the attack is heading back to the memorial site.
Lauren Bruner, one of five remaining survivors who was on the USS Arizona during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack, is set to attend a remembrance service Wednesday in Hawaii at the site of the ship's sunken wreckage.
Now 96 years old, Bruner, who was 21 at the time, was hit with bullets and suffered severe burns during the attack, but he managed to escape. In total, more than 2,300 servicemen died during the attack on Pearl Harbor, the majority of whom were aboard the Arizona.
The U.S. Navy and National Park Service expect that several dozen attack survivors will be attending Wednesday's ceremony, which includes a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. HST, the same minute the Japanese planes hit the first target in the harbor.
