As stated previously, it is better to let a large spread develop. That discourages casual bid whacks from impatient people looking for quick cash because they think they can see another runner elsewhere.
It also forces anyone who wants to get in / add on news to buy on the ask for fear of getting left out on a big run on news. Those that are trying to sell mickey mouse amounts on the ask all cancel on news to get more and then it is so thin to the upside the chase is on.
That's exactly what happened on the last run - as described in stickey # 943.
