Because that would make too much sense. Instead, Why not sell the shares, buy those short and drive the price lower for the buyback. That is what appears to be happening.

Yesterday the majority of the volume was Short volume and I expect the same today.

With the buyback looming, who on earth would be shorting all this stock? ...unless you have an inside to the amount of dilition remaining.
