You may be more right than you know, however, history shows that every few 100 years, society begins to treat material goods as a more lofty goal than the sancticy of life. Unfortunately, the children are the 1st to suffer. As has been said before here, hug your loved ones a little closer each and every day and never forget to say I love you. The time you forget my end up being the last time you had a chance. For all who are of the Catholic view, say a rosary and light a candle for the victims and the survivors who will live with this pain forever.
