Old enough to remember an old saying that went like this:
If you vote Democrat you'll get a war and if you vote Republican you'll get a recession. For a while though it seemed a vote for someone named Bush meant you got both....but honestly I don't think there's much difference between the Dems and GOP. Southerners used to always vote Democratic until guys like Pat Robertson got in bed with the GOP and adopted Romes anti-abortion views.
In the 70s and earlier American Evangelicals were decidedly pro-choice, differentiating their views from Rome's by siding with poor people who couldn't afford to engage a private doctor to perform the procedure.
