He doesn't have to 'save his reputation'. Just because the ass on fire crowd didn't like his decision doesn't mean he gives a rat's ass about what they think.
He told Congress he would present new information if it arose, that's what he's doing.
There is spirited disagreement about the timing AND the content of the emails.
