Appears to me that the polls are confirming the 'backfiring' is all on the Trump campaign.
He laid the predicate, no pun intended, when he stated several times what he liked to do, what he could do, on the video.
Then in the debate he claimed he 'didn't do those things'
He is being contradicted repeatedly, daily.
