The problem is the competition....
Both Russia and the US are interested in exerting their influence in places like the middle east. The problem in Syria arose when the Assad regime opted to go with a Russian back natural pipeline project that runs through Iran....Washington wanted the pipeline to go through Turkey. That's when the US started backing anti Assad insurgent groups to destabilize the country.
If Syria had gone with the American pipeline project it probably would have been the Russians backing the anti government forces in Syria....
