I grew up with a coal furnace in our utility basement.
(also with a sump pump)
My brother and I when old enough would take turns
nights to go down and stoke the coals and add coal.
And later shovel out ash of course. Chores eh.
My first aesthetic experience remembered was the
coal in the coal chute with snow blowing in through
the cracks above sprinkled on the lumps of coal.
Well their were also beautifully busy but short
dust devils on the base paths at our baseball field.
