Fair? Media Pounces on Trump for Comment on Vets with PTSD
Fair or unfair? You decide...
The mainstream media pounced on a comment made by Donald Trump about veterans struggling with PTSD.
Here's what Trump said in response to a question from a U.S. Marine about curbing suicides among those who have served in the military.
“When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat, and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in this room have seen many times over and you’re strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can’t handle it, and they see horror stories, they see events that you couldn’t see in a movie, nobody would believe it."
That led to a flurry of headlines like this one on Daily Beast... SHAMEFUL: Draft-Dodger Donald Trump Implies PTSD Sufferers Are Weak.
Many other outlets, including NBC News and Politico, reported that Trump had implied that veterans suffering from PTSD are not as strong as others in the military.
The Trump campaign immediately pushed back, with Gen. Michael Flynn (Ret.), a Trump adviser, saying that the comment was reported out of context "in order to deceive voters and veterans."
The Marine who asked the question, Staff Sergeant Chad Robichaux, called the reports "sickening" and agreed that the media manipulated the quotes
“I took his comments to be thoughtful and understanding of the struggles many veterans have,” said Robichaux, who served in Afghanistan and suffers from PTSD.
