Japan and Russia lead, for different reasons, the modern (if you can call Russia outside its military 'modern') society contraction of population model
the USA is the only major country w longstanding substantial immigration (most illegal) so the USA has not experienced total depopulation, though domestic groups have since 1970's,substantially changing demographics and thus culture/politics
a subsidiary reason why Japan is no longer the top importer of iron,as it was before 2001. I thought Japans need to rebuild the tsunami ravaged north a possible opportunity for iron resource poor Japan to import more iron but Japan has both dragged its feet in rebuilding beyond every promise made plus taken shortcuts, and partially due to depopulation elsewhere has de facto permanently located many survivors elsewhere
