I think as investors who have been aware of 4K for a lot longer time than the general population, it's easy to perceive 4K as mainstream.
IMO I still think it has a ways to go to hit mainstream status for the average media consumer.
The 4K ownership level is still pretty low (something like 15%, someone correct me if I'm wrong please)
I still see deals out there for HD TV's at a substantial discount from the 4k models. I've seen newer model Samsung 60' HD only TV's for less than $700. That tells me that HD is still ramping down and 4K is still ramping up.
Whether NTEK decides to partner or whether they decide to go out on their own, either way it will still be a profitable venture as long as they execute from a business standpoint.
For now, the technological advantage is still in their favor as well in regards to bandwidth reduction. In the growing 4k market, that's huge... imo
