Melvin Weiss, a big time CA Attorney from New York, went to jail for this exact reason. Using people as lead plaintiff in multiple cases. I think he was fined $10 mm.
He spent a couple years in jail. The rest under house arrest on Park Avenue. And he kept hundreds of millions more.
