Hillary Clinton Leads Donald Trump By Seven Points In New National Poll

By Sean Colarossi on Mon, Aug 29th, 2016 at 7:59 pm

According to a new Monmouth University poll released on Monday, Hillary Clinton has a solid seven-point lead over Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup, 49-42.

This despite Trump’s recent strategy of desperately latching onto conspiracy theories about the Democratic nominee’s health, the work of the Clinton Foundation, and even Clinton’s intelligence.

Clinton’s margin remains the same with third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein included.

While the media continues to perpetuate the myth that the race between the two candidates is a nail-biter, the polling continues to show a steady Clinton advantage.

She now leads Trump by an average of 7 percentage points, according to HuffPost Pollster.

Clinton’s numbers are substantially better than President Obama’s were at this phase of the 2012 campaign, and he eventually coasted to re-election over Mitt Romney.

As Ryan Struyk of ABC News tweeted today:

Just for comparison on Clinton +7 in new Monmouth poll:

At this time in 2012...
ABC/Post: Romney +1
CNN: Tie
Fox: Romney +1
CBS: Obama +1

According to RealClearPolitics, Obama led Romney by roughly one point on this date four years ago, as the chart below illustrates.

There is plenty of time left in this campaign for the numbers to swing toward Trump, but there is no evidence right now that he has the advantage – or that he is even close to overtaking the Democratic nominee.

In fact, as wacky as this election cycle has been, the horserace numbers between Clinton and Trump have remained surprisingly stable.

In June, before either party’s convention, another Monmouth University poll gave the Democratic nominee the very same seven-point lead over Trump.

As we head into the critical, post-Labor Day phase of this campaign, this poll – and most other surveys – show Clinton with sustained leads over the spray-tanned buffoon.

She is still winning, and right now it’s not really even close.
